The young girl killed herself four days after the attack, which occurred on May 14, told CNN.
The CNN subsidiary RTL Info reported that the girl was raped in the Westerbegraafplaats cemetery in Ghent after meeting a friend. She was then joined by four more who took pictures of raping her and shared them on social media, the report added.
The report said the police were able to use these images to identify the suspects.
“Three minors were placed in a closed institution by the youth judge in Ghent and two adults (both 18 years old) were arrested by the investigating judge in Ghent for crimes that occurred shortly before the victim’s death. The council chamber in Ghent today decided that the two adults’ detention would be extended by a month, “the East Flanders Public Prosecutor told CNN on Wednesday.
The two adult suspects have been charged with “rape, indecent assault and taking and sharing pictures that could represent an attack on the integrity of a person” and have no previous convictions, reported RTL Info.
Belgian Justice Minister Vincent van Quickenborne expressed his reaction on Twitter on Tuesday, writing: “Horrible. No words for it. My thoughts are with family and friends. Suspects have been arrested and the investigation is ongoing. Justice must and will be reached.
“I call on victims of sexual violence: Report a complaint. There are people who help you in sexual centers. The judiciary will do everything to catch and punish perpetrators. Even those who distribute images, because that is also punishable. Absolute priority for justice. “
