Her debut as Britain’s “First Lady” comes just two weeks after she and the Prime Minister, with whom she has a one-year-old son, married in a ceremony that was kept secret until after the event.
On Friday, the 33-year-old will take center stage as she and her husband greet the remaining leaders of the Group of Seven Nations – Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan – and their partners for the G7 summit in Cornwall, Carbis Bay -Hotel.
The Bidens and Johnsons met in Carbis Bay by the sea on Thursday before the women left for tea and the two leaders went on a bilateral meeting.
As the two leaders posed for photos prior to the talks, Biden noted that it was a pleasure meeting Johnson’s new wife, and quipped that both he and Johnson were “married well past our station.”
Johnson replied, “I will not disagree on this, I will not contradict the President on this, or even anything else. I think it is very likely.”
Carrie Johnson, née Symonds, won’t be the only wife to make her first G7 appearance when the summit kicks off on Friday.
For the first time there will also be Jill Biden, Mariko Suga, wife of the new Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, and Maria Serenella Cappello, wife of the Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
Last year’s G7, which was supposed to be hosted by then President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump in the United States, was canceled due to the pandemic.
Carrie Johnson’s Cornwall summit debut so soon after the news of their wedding has sparked widespread UK media coverage.
What Carrie is wearing in the traditional “family photo” taken at the start of the summit on Friday will no doubt be scrutinized, as will the entertainment she has developed for her fellow wives while the summit is in progress.
All leaders and their partners will attend a reception on Friday evening with Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, before heading to a dinner of turbot caught by Cornish fishermen and a selection of Cornish cheeses.
On Saturday evening, the Johnsons greet the leaders and their partners for a barbecue on Carbis Bay Beach. The meal is preceded by a Red Arrows flyby followed by a nautical performance.
Carrie and Boris Johnson got married in a “little ceremony” at Westminster Cathedral on May 29th and will celebrate with family and friends again next summer, according to a spokesman for Downing Street.
The wedding came just days after the couple reportedly sent save-the-date cards for an event to family and friends on July 30, 2022.
Later in 2020, she made her first television appearance together with Johnson to thank NHS staff for treating him in the hospital and giving birth to their baby.
He was previously married to Allegra Mostyn-Owen for six years.
