Google denied reports on Friday that its next phone, the Pixel 5a, was canceled and the phone will launch in the US and Japan later this year. The phone has not yet been officially announced. This is the first time Google has confirmed it exists.
“Pixel 5a 5G will not be canceled,” a Google spokesman told CNBC. “It will be available in the US and Japan later this year and is announced in line with the launch of the A-Series phone last year.”
Google’s Pixel phones usually come with the latest version of Android and include some unique features only available on Google devices. The A-series Pixel devices like the Pixel 4a launched in August are cheaper than Google’s other Pixel phones like the retired Pixel 4 or the current Pixel 5, which often have high quality screens and designs. The pixel 5a is expected around the same time period.
Google is struggling to keep up with other Android phone manufacturers, but its cheaper Pixels have helped drive sales.
Rumor has it that Google’s Pixel 5a has been canceled due to the ongoing global chip shortage affecting everything from cars to game consoles.
