A Namibian sports presenter complained to her colleague before being told she was on the air live – resulting in a very awkward silence and stare between the women.
Jessica Kaimu blamed news anchor Elmarie Kapunda for the way she presented her bulletin when she was told, “Jessica, we’re live.”
A deadly silence fell over the stunned TV presenters who just stared at each other until the show was interrupted.
The stunned look from news anchor Elmarie Kapunda has left viewers in the lurch and has gone viral on the Internet
Jessica Kaimu gave her colleague a dressing room, apparently believing they were still in rehearsal mode
The two women shot each other deadly glances in complete silence after being told they were on the air
In that hilarious moment, dozens of memes were shared online and even reenacted by their counterparts in South Africa on SABC News.
The Namibia Broadcast Corporation (NBC) has not yet commented on the incident.
The clip shows Kapunda closing her news program with a spontaneous introduction to the sports segment.
“No, we won’t do that! You will just greet me and say, “Take it away,” Kaimu replies angrily, as if she thought they were rehearsing.
There is a pause before an off-camera colleague tells her that they are live.
And what follows is a terribly embarrassing silence in which the women can do nothing but throw angry glances at each other.
The camera falls on the news anchor Kapunda, who looks forward, blinking, before pouting her face and looking directly at the sports reporter.
The director then quickly makes the decision to shorten it to a break.
The hashtag #JessicaWeAreLive was soon trending on Twitter, with lots of hay from the tense interaction that was broadcast live in Namibia on Wednesday evening.
South African news anchor Sakina Kamwendo and sports presenter Vaylen Kirtley even made their own version, playing the roles of Kapunda and Kaimu on the set of SABC News.
