Roy Keane has ditched Jamie Carragher’s suggestion that Manchester United not go after Jack Grealish this summer, saying he would swap the Aston Villa star for Paul Pogba “tomorrow”.
Keane took the opportunity live on the air to share his thoughts on United’s upcoming transfer plans and to say that he would like to match Harry Kane with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The pair spoke on Sky Sports while covering the Red Devils clash against Liverpool, which was eventually postponed after United fans stormed Old Trafford to demand that the Glazers step down as owners of the club.
Grealish and Kane have long been linked with a move to the Europa League semi-finalists. Keane said he would love to see both players in the Theater of Dreams.
Roy Keane thinks Manchester United should target Jack Grealish in the summer transfer window
The Irishman told Sky Sports he would swap the captain of the Aston Villa for Paul Pogba “tomorrow”.
Keane also says the Red Devils should pick the league’s top scorer Harry Kane “whatever it costs”.
“The two players I’ve been thinking of over the past few weeks who I think are brilliant for Manchester United would go with Harry Kane – whatever the cost – and I would go with (Jack) Grealish too. ” said the seven-time Premier League winner.
‘United are still missing that particular player. I think Grealish would give them that. He would love to play at Old Trafford, I think the fans would love him.
“What I admire about Jack, I think he’s got a lot of courage on a football pitch, he’s great in tight spaces. Over the past year or two, its end product has improved. He’s an excellent player.
‘We know Kane would guarantee goals. Would it be difficult to get these two players? You bet it would be your life but Manchester United must try to get the best they can or we will have the same conversation next year about United almost there.
‘I think Jack would be ready for Manchester United. Villa is a big club and they do it very well but I think Jack we are talking about players being selfish, Harry Kane being selfish – well, Jack has to be selfish trying to get to the next level. ‘
Grealish’s formidable form in the first five months of the season was Villa in the top four
Kane is enjoying another fantastic season in front of goal after scoring 20 Premier League goals for the fifth time in his career this season.
He’s also become an assistant this season, scoring 13 league goals to take him to the top, two ahead of Bruno Fernandes and Kevin De Bruyne and three ahead of Grealish and Son Heung-min.
Grealish was one of the top players in English football for the first five months of this season when his relentless energy and cunning brought Villa to the discussion of a Top 4 result.
However, his absence since mid-February coincided with Dean Smith’s men who had only scored 12 points in 11 games.
However, the 25-year-old midfielder has not played since mid-February due to a shin injury
Kane’s assist-making has taken his deadly partnership with Son Heung-min to new heights
The 25-year-old sustained a shin injury and suffered a setback in his recovery a few weeks ago.
However, the creative midfielder is still expected to qualify for England in time for the Euros this summer and Keane said without hesitation that he would bring in Grealish at Pogba’s expense.
The 28-year-old Frenchman has had his most consistent season at United, scoring Europa League winners against Burnley, Fulham and AC Milan. However, the murmuring of his agent Mino Raiola’s dissatisfaction means the midfielder’s chances of renewal are increasing with his stint at Old Trafford after 2022 is still on the balance sheet of this summer’s transfer window.
Carragher said the attack options available to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer mean Grealish may not be a priority, but Keane shot back: ‘Jack, not for Manchester United? So what, you’ve had Pogba for the past three or four years, has it got you anywhere near winning championship titles? Absolutely not.
“I would definitely trade Grealish for Pogba tomorrow. Of course (they can all play together). Why not?
‘We look at the stats for Manchester United over the past few years, whether it’s the semi-finals or ten league games that they have drawn in. Seven or eight of them were 0-0.
“They didn’t have the quality in times of crisis. You can talk about Pogba, but they didn’t when they had to.
Pogba arguably had his best season so far for United, scoring three winning goals
However, the murmur of his agent Mino Raiola means that the future of his Red Devils remains unclear
“When Grealish comes in, get rid of one or two of them, get rid of Pogba, keep moving him.
‘You’re talking about a contract. I think they’re worried because he’s last year. If you want to benefit from it, do so this summer.
“You can’t have enough good players at a club like Manchester United.”
