“The Arctic is a very important region of the Russian Federation that applies to both our borders and our Special Economic Zone. The economic potential is growing year by year. You know that there are general plans for national development in the Arctic Zone, and all of this is implemented consistently, “said Peskov.
Satellite imagery provided to CNN by space company Maxar shows a strong and ongoing build-up of Russian military bases and hardware on the country’s Arctic coast, as well as underground storage facilities for new high-tech weapons and the Poseidon 2M39 torpedo.
This unmanned stealth torpedo is powered by a nuclear reactor and is said to sneak past coastal defenses – such as those of the United States – on the ocean floor by Russian designers.
Russian hardware in the Far North includes bombers and MiG31BM jets, as well as new radar systems near the Alaskan coast.
“Nobody wants the Arctic as a region to be militarized,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said on Monday as he addressed reports on Russian military capacity building in the Arctic.
“We are clearly aware that the region is a key area, vital to our own home defense, and as a potential strategic corridor between Indo-Pacific Europe and the homeland, which, if you will, is vulnerable to expanded competition would do, “he said.
“We are committed to protecting your US national security interests in the Arctic by maintaining a rules-based order in the region, particularly through our network of allies and partners in the Arctic who have the same mutual interest that we have in this very same Order, “added Kirby.
Regarding these concerns, Peskov said, “It should not be forgotten that America itself has never abandoned its military presence in the Arctic and has never weakened its attention to the Arctic.”
The Russian construction was aligned by troop and equipment movements of NATO and the USA. For example, American B-1 Lancer bombers stationed at the Norwegian Air Force Base Ørland recently completed missions in the Eastern Barents Sea. The U.S. military’s stealth submarine Seawolf was recognized by U.S. officials as being in the region in August.
